Welcome to Dalry Primary'SCool (Dumfries & Galloway)

Welcome to Dalry Primary'SCool website.

These two photos show us at BARFIL farm with Maggie Gordon and John Wheeler. It was the 'potato' part of our storytelling project 'War, Peace, Justice and Potatoes'.  We had a great day listening to John telling us stories about resolving conflict; and Maggie showing us her two PERCHERONs Harris and Lewis ploughing between the potatoes. It was excellent!

Dalry is a small, rural Primary school based in Kirkcudbrightshire, (Dumfries & Galloway), Scotland with 51 pupils, attached to a nursery with 15 children and a secondary with just over 70 pupils.  We can go to school here from aged 3 to aged 16 all in the same building! Our secondary is the smallest secondary school in Dumfries and Galloway, but it is also a great school to go to and we are looking forward to getting there! ( www.dalryschool.dumgal.sch.uk/ ).  After 4th year we go to Castle Douglas High School . ( www.castledouglashighschool.dumgal.sch.uk/ ).

We think Dalry'SCool. There is actually more than one "Dalry" in Scotland - but only one "St. John's Town of Dalry", and that's us! Our Dalry got its name when John the Baptist passed through the village. He was tired and rested on a stone. That very stone is still here, all these years later, and that's why we are called "St. John's Town of Dalry".

Before St John came through we used to be called the "Clachan of Dalry". "Clachan" means 'village'. The old name is remembered in the name of one of our two hotels, "The Clachan".

We have another Hotel in Dalry, called "The Lochinvar". The name is all that is left of the island castle of Lochinvar because the valley was flooded to make a reservoir to provide water for Dalry. Every summer when the water level drops you can see the top of the ruins, but whenever there is a really bad drought - like this year, the whole island can be seen at the bottom of the reservoir.

GREEN FLAG ECO SCHOOL
We are very eco friendly at our school. We recycle and reuse loads of things. You can read all about it in the Eco'sCool section; but our least favourite job is washing out the compost bins! EVERY classroom and staffroom has a bin to collect apple cores and banana skins. Every Friday afternoon P4/5 go round collecting the bins, then we empty them outside in the big composters, then we have to wash them before putting them back!

  WEATHER STATION
Another thing we are very famous for is our weather station. We help NASA scientists to monitor Global warming by sending them readings of the daily max/min temperature; cloud type; cloud cover; rainfall, and we measure the pH reading of our rainfall as well.
We do a phenology study too. We watch for when buds appear on certain branches of certain trees. If they come earlier and earlier it will be a sign of global warming.
